Every day, more than 350 children in Sioux Falls and nearby areas find themselves unable to live with their biological families. These children need safe, loving homes where they can grow and thrive. Since 2012, The Foster Network has played a vital role in connecting these children with foster, kinship, and adoptive families. The organization acts as a reliable source of support and resources, helping caregivers provide stable, nurturing environments.
This post explores how people like you can support the The Foster Network's mission and strengthen families through volunteer opportunities and donations, and how community involvement makes a real difference.

The Role of The Foster Network in Sioux Falls
The Foster Network serves as a central hub for foster, kinship, and adoptive families in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It ensures caregivers have access to the resources they need to create happy homes for children who cannot live with their biological families. These resources include baby equipment, clothing, school supplies, and emotional support.
The organization’s work is essential because foster families often face challenges finding the right supplies and information. The Foster Network fills this gap by providing a welcoming space where families can get what they need quickly and safely.
Volunteer Opportunities That Make a Difference
Volunteers are the backbone of The Foster Network’s operations. Around 75 volunteers contribute their time each week, usually in shifts lasting about two hours. These volunteers help with hands-on tasks and community outreach, making a direct impact on the lives of foster children and their families.
Ongoing Roles
Baby Items Safety and Organization Support
Volunteers test and clean baby equipment to ensure safety. They also organize nursery gear so families can easily find what they need.
New Room Stocking and Organization
This role involves prepping and sorting new resources for incoming families. Volunteers help keep the space tidy and welcoming.
New Inventory and Shed Organization Support
Volunteers manage bulk donations and maintain the storage sheds on-site, ensuring everything is in order.
Teen Girls’ Closet Section Lead
This volunteer takes charge of the teen girls’ fashion inventory, arranging seasonal styles and layouts to make the closet inviting and useful.
How Large Groups and Corporate Teams Can Help:
Local businesses and community groups often book team volunteer shifts. A business can regularly organize group volunteer days to support The Foster Network. Volunteers also assist with seasonal events like the annual School Year Kickoff, where backpacks and school supplies are distributed to children in foster care.
Volunteering offers a chance to connect with the community and see the immediate impact of your efforts. To get involved or check current openings, contact Assistant Director Kaitlin Smeby at volunteers@thefosternet.org.

How Donations Support Foster Families
Donations, both physical and financial, are crucial to The Foster Network’s mission. They provide children with immediate comfort and basic essentials, helping families focus on care rather than searching for supplies.
In-Person Item Drop-Offs

Financial Contributions and The Impact of Community Support
On any given day, more than 350 newborns, children, and youth in our community do not go home to their biological families. Instead, they are cared for in a loving foster care setting. With your help, no child – or family – will navigate foster care alone. The Foster Network is a registered 501(c)(3) organization, making all financial gifts tax-deductible. Gifts can be configured as one-time, monthly, quarterly, or yearly recurring donations.
Sponsor an Event
Sponsorships usually range between $500-$4,000 and an option is given to contribute toward the event or fund the entire event. Sponsorship benefits include:
Your brand logo featured prominently on the official event flyer.
Public recognition and shoutouts during the event.
Dedicated social media promotional posts highlighting your business.
