Ava Burns is a licensed attorney in the State of South Dakota who is committed to guiding individuals and families through some of life's most complex transitions with resilience and clarity. Recognizing that both criminal matters and family law disputes can be deeply personal, she works to help her clients understand their options and navigate the legal process with confidence.
Ava grew up in Brookings, South Dakota, alongside her six siblings. Before deciding to pursue a career in law, she graduated from South Dakota State University, earning Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. Born-and-raised in South Dakota, Ava stayed close to home while pursuing her legal education and building her career.
She earned her Juris Doctor from the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law. During law school, she served on R.D. Hurd’s Pro Bono Society and volunteered for local youth diversion programs, where she built a strong foundation in client-centered advocacy and public service. These opportunities, as well as her real-world experiences combined with her legal education, helped shape the practical, compassionate, and level-headed approach she brings to her practice today.
When Ava is out of the office, you’ll most likely find her spending time with family and friends, walking her dogs, “playing” pickleball or golf, watching true crime documentaries, or catching up on sleep.
