Navigating the Real Estate Market after Divorce

Not every divorce means buying or selling the marital home, but if you find yourself re-entering the real estate market after a divorce, there's a few things you may want to know.

Divorce is a major life-changer and usually forces one or both parties to re-evaluate their current living arrangements. One party may stay in the marital home while the other seeks new living arrangements. The marital home may also be sold and both parties must find new living arrangements.

Adjusting to life post-divorce can be challenging enough to navigate, so we sat down with a local realtor here in the Sioux Falls, South Dakota to get professional insights into the real estate market for our area. Meet Jon Fick, Broker Associate with 605 Real Estate. We asked Jon a few questions about buying and selling in today's housing market. Here's what he had to say:

Q: What would you say the best first step would be for someone looking to buy a home?

"In this market, it is especially important that buyers work with an experienced and knowledgeable real estate agent. The competition for housing is strong, so having a knowledgeable agent will better position you for success and keep you protected."

Q: Do you expect the market to remain strong over the next few years?

"Yes, I see the market to continue to remain strong in the Sioux Falls area for some time. As the city grows, it continues to provide more opportunities and attract more people and businesses from other areas of the country."

Q: How do you go about selling a home?

"Again, working with an experienced and knowledgeable agent is paramount in this competitive market. It's the foundation of success when selling a home."

Q: So what are the benefits of hiring an agent to sell my home?

"An agent helps with everything from listing a competitive price to marketing your home to potential buyers. The right agent should be protecting your interests along the way and working to get you the best results possible."

Q: Buying and selling a home can be stressful. What should I look for to make sure everything goes smoothly?

"Look for someone not only with experience and knowledge in the market but also with substantial experience with contracts to help ensure a smooth and low stress sales process."
